Bart Michiels is a Flemish composer and electronic musician, living in Antwerp, Belgium. Michiels writes both for acoustic instruments as well as for electronics but, in essence, his music is about weaving intricate sonic landscapes that draw in the listener in a sincere way. Fueled by the desire to explore new sound possibilities, Michiels often mixes acoustic and electronic elements in his work.

In addition, a central idea in his music is the fusing of idioms and forms of classical music with those of contemporary alternative and electronic music. This approach results in a highly personal and intimate soundworld.

Kaleidoscope Dreams, a one hour electronic composition written in 2023, is the current culmination of Michiels' pursuit to fuse his classical background together with his electronic music performance practice. The resulting piece is a reflection on finding new expressive possibilities in contemporary electronic music through the combination of acoustic and electronic sound elements.

The composition opens with ethereal and atmospheric textures, enveloping the listener in a serene and introspective state. As the piece slowly unfolds, soaring melodies and rich harmonies start to appear, woven together with intricate electronic textures, pulsating beats, and atmospheric soundscapes. Throughout the one hour timeline of this performance, Michiels guides the audience through a rich tapestry of diverse and contrasting musical textures, emotions, and atmospheres, armed with an amplified piano and a broad array of electronic instruments including, loopers, pre-recorded tape tracks, synthesizers and midi controllers. This piece was first performed on June 21st 2023 at the Willem Twee Toonzaal in Den Bosch,

In ‘I Sit and Look Out’, his most recent work for choir & orchestra, Michiels clearly states this love for orchestral music. Based on a poem by Walt Whitman, the work features Michiels’ typical rhythmically vivid style and was premiered by Brabant Koor and Kamerata Zuid in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven in April 2022.

Next to orchestral compositions, Michiels also focuses on writing choral music. One example is his recent work ‘De Profundis’, a composition for mixed choir & organ which was premiered on April 22, 2023 by the Dutch chamber choir Capella Brabant at the Big Church in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, under the direction of artistic director and conductor Marc Versteeg.

Michiels' written scores are published by Donemus publishing.
